Asian Games: Japan poses another tough test for Alyssa Valdez, Team PH

JAKARTA—The road does not get any easier for the Philippine women’s volleyball team as Alyssa Valdez and co. are set to face another powerhouse in Japan in the 2018 Asian Games on Tuesday at the Bulungan Sports Hall.
Opening serve is at 4:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. in Manila).
Playing in the continental showcase for the first time in 36 years, the Philippines got a rude welcome in the form of Thailand last Sunday.
The Filipinas could not sustain their fast start and were eventually outclassed by the Southeast Asian giants 25-22, 25-12, 25-15.
They expect another difficult game against Japan, a five-time Asian Games champion and one of the top-ranked teams in the world.
“Pag-aaralan namin s'yempre and definitely ibib'gay pa rin namin 'yung best namin and magte-training muna kami,” said Philippines coach Shaq delos Santos, who touted the improvement made by his players even in the loss to Thailand.
“Happy kami pero alam namin na meron pa eh, meron pang ilalabas ‘yung team.”
The Filipinas, anchored by skipper Abigail Marano and ace spikers Alyssa Valdez and Jaja Santiago, will face some of the top players in the world including Nana Iwasaki, Risa Shinnabe and Yuki Ishii.
